FruCall is Fru-Cool

Have you ever been out at a store and seen an item that you consider purchasing, but you really would like to know what you could get it for online. Now some of you super hi-tech folks have the fancy pants cell phones with data plans that let you fire up a browser on your phone and check it out right there.

For the rest of us, enter a really neat service called FruCall. You simply dial 1-888-DO-FRUCALL (1-888-363-7822), enter the UPC code of the item, your zip code, and then listen as it lists the New and Used prices (including shipping cost to your area) for the item. How cool is that?

I just tried it with the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album Stadium Arcadium (which is absolutely incredible I might add) that I purchased this past weekend at evil Best Buy for $16.99. And I hear from FruCall that I could have orderd it from evil Wal-Mart.com for a mere $12 bucks. This is definitely a service I will be taking advantage of in the future.

Speaking of free cell services, hope you didn’t forget about 1-800-FREE-411 for free directory assistance from you cell phone. Another handy one to remember.

Birmingham Zoo – Memorial Day 2006

A bit belated, but over Memorial Day, Casey and I made the trek up to Birmingham, AL to visit with friends. Rob was in from Sacramento, CA along with Christian from Atlanta, GA. We stayed with the ever gracious hosts Rich and Laura and of course Mike and Brian were both around and it was a blast to hang out with everyone.

The reason for heading up was a big, no, make that huge, party honoring Rob’s visit. Much of that party can’t be discussed (or remembered in exact detail), so unfortunately I can’t detail it in this post.

Saturday afternoon, Casey and I had the afternoon free so we decided to check out the Birmingham Zoo.

It was the first visit for both of us to the zoo in the Ham, but we were very pleased with the experience. The zoo is located very close to downtown Birmingham. Unfortunately I was having very bad driving day, so we ended up taking the very, very scenic route to get there. I missed our turn off 459, and thus we circled around the east side of Birmingham and then came down from the North, only adding about an extra hour to the drive 🙂 …. but it was scenic.

The zoo admission is $11 for adults and all major credit cards are accepted. It took us about 2 hours to tour the whole zoo, which has a pretty impressive array of animals for a small zoo.

They have some bats:

Monkeys:

Monkey 3

They had a big female lion that we happened to catch right at feeding time:

Some giraffes and ostriches (we missed the giraffe encounter unfortunately)

The wonderful American Bison was represented as well.

Buffalo

They even had Rhinos and Elephants, oh my!

There aquatic selection was limited to a cute (and photogenic) California Sea Lion.

And some scary crocodiles

At one point in the area with the bird exhibit we saw that the roosters really get the run of the place. They were just running loose through the bamboo to the side of the sidewalk.

Roosters Running Free

And to highlight this post something that was pretty amazing. The thickest rattlesnake I have ever seen. This thing must have been 8 to 10 inches in diameter at its thickest point. Its head was larger than your fist. I wouldn’t want to run into this guy along the trail in the woods far from civilization.

Biggest Rattlesnake Ever

So overall, great trip to the Ham. I would highly recommend the Zoo if you get a free afternoon. There also are Botanical Gardens next door to the zoo, but we didn’t get a chance to check them out. Maybe next trip…

Thanks to all of the out of towners and locals for another memorable vist to the Ham. As always thank you Rich and Laura for letting Casey and I crash with you guys and hang out.

Meetup with Old Friends

Got a call last week from a friend I hadn’t seen in about a year with an invite to dinner with another long lost friend.

Holly Miller (former University of South Alabama Volleyball extraordinaire and CIS graduate), now Holly Hunt has returned from her time in Japan. She, her husband Billy, and their son Aidan are finally going to be back in the US for a while. Billy is in the Navy and is being stationed in Virginia Beach, VA for at least 3 years.

It was really great to see them (it’s been about a year and half to two years since I heard from them). I actually got to meet them for dinner last Friday and then for lunch again on Monday, so double the time to catch up. And now they are off to VA.

Their newest addition Aidan is a little handful. He has his momma’s red hair and an endless supply of energy. He was a very happy baby too (which was good considering how well babies and I tend to get along).

You can keep track of their goings on by checking out their site at http://www.billynholly.com. She has a quasi-blog set up here: The Hunt’s Journal, but no RSS feed. Come on Holly, RSS is what all of the cool kids are doing, be a good afternoon project for you when the little one is napping, plus then I can read your site from my Feed Aggregator. E-mail me if you need any pointers.

And for those of you that want to contact Holly and Billy, their e-mail is listed here: Contact Holly And Billy. I’m sure she would love to hear from any of the old gang (wonder if anyone has the pics from the ACM Oozeball Tournament we all played in).

Great seeing you Holly, I will try and keep in touch better this time 🙂

Run Don’t Walk to Consolidate Those Student Loans

Come July 1, 2006 the rates on student loans will be jumping around 2 percent so now is the time to consolidate and lock in your existing rate. That increase is almost a 50 percent jump in interest for most borrowers, so pursue consolidation with a new lender or refinancing through your existing lender to lock in the current lifetime-low rates.

Here is an article from the Christian Science Monitor that talks about the change.

If you miss the July 1 deadline, you will be kicking yourself for up to 10 years as you pay back your student loans with a higher rate than you had to. Don’t delay, lenders are probably being overwhelmed with consolidation requests. So, stop reading right now, and start the consolidation process. You’ll thank me for it.

As far as where to consolidate, I would start with your existing lender. If you don’t like your current lender, you can look at www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov or Sallie Mae for more information.
